JackS

Jack S.

Guitar/Vocals

Jack S. is originally from Fort Madison, a small Mississippi River town in southeastern Iowa. He got his first guitar when he was 12. It was a really cheap Silvertone acoustic that he never quite learned to play. In fact, he admits he had almost given up on the guitar completely.

Then when he was 14, he saw the Beatles. After that, he no longer considered learning guitar to be optional. It was going to happen. One electric guitar later, it did…. Sort of…  At this point, Jack began to practice more or less constantly, and within a couple of years, i.e. by the time he was a Senior in High School, his band was playing regular rock and roll dates, while folk music, both electric and acoustic, was becoming more and more popular too.

During the next four years, while he was at the University of Iowa in the late 1960s, Jack and his roommates had a rock and roll band that played weekend fraternity parties and college bars in Iowa City. At the same time he was also teaching guitar at a local music studio, and playing solo gigs in Iowa City’s downtown coffee houses and folk bars during the week. All in all, it was a good time.

With college graduation and marriage, music performance ceased for a couple of years, but then resumed as a second income generator in about 1975, and since then, has never stopped. Along the way, a collection of vintage guitars and amplifiers has been acquired, and the variety of music played has widened to include Blues, Pop, and Country/Western, as well as the Rock and Roll and Folk music of the early days.

The real kick of The Other Band is in being able to perform an extremely wide variety of music with friends who love playing together. Feeling free to work up anything they think their audiences will enjoy, from Broadway to Country, and from Big Band to Rock and Roll is great fun, and it shows.  It’s all about the list
