Rick A.

Drummer/Vocalist

Rick started playing trombone in the 5th grade- only because his music teacher needed trombone players! But he really had his heart set on playing drums. His dad kept an old trap set in the basement that he literally beat the covers off. He sent for blue and white pearl covers and made them look like new.

In 1962 Iowa passed a bill for liquor by the drink, and bars and night clubs sprang up everywhere. A local restaurant owner added a lounge to his establishment and was in search of a “house band” for week ends. Rick’s dad- who played trumpet and sax with several bands- knew the owner of the Granada Lounge, and set up an audition. When their original drummer “drank” himself out of the job, Rick was called on to fill in. He was only 16 at the time.

That was the beginning of “The Three Knights”. The group quickly caught on, performing 21 of the 31 nights in May of 1963. Rick “filled in” until he left for the Navy in 1966. The guys found a great replacement for him in a highway patrolman named Dick Lenius, who continued to share drumming duties with Rick after he returned from the service.

In December of 1971, “The Four Knights” cut an album for their loyal followers. Johnny Durham brought his recording equipment to the Skyway club in Reinbeck from his studio in Cedar Falls, where “Knight Sounds” was recorded.  500 copies were gone in a heartbeat.

Some time later, John Lenius (Dick’s son) teamed up with Rick to play the same style of music with a group called The Constellations, playing the Grundy Center, Waterloo, and Marshalltown areas. Since then, Rick’s steady hand and smooth vocals have led him to perform with numerous area bands throughout the years, including: The Townmen, The Country Jacks, The Devil’s Disciples, Denim & Lace, Silver Creek, Cross Roads, Lonesome Highway, and The Rhythm Rangers. Today, he continues playing with several other bands, including Prairie Lightning, The BASICS, and Silver Creek, in addition to The Other Band. Rick enthuses that after 46 years, he still loves every minute of it!!!
